Best organic chemistry solver app for iPhone
There is no honest global ranking without ratings data. Use this checklist instead: named mechanisms, readable steps, a camera that handles skeletal structures, and study tools that still work when you are offline.
What “best” should mean for org chem
General chemistry scanners are optimized for balancing equations and stoichiometry. Organic chemistry homework is mostly mechanism choice and product prediction. A useful solver has to read a reaction scheme, name the pathway (SN1, SN2, E1, E2, Markovnikov, and the rest), and explain each step — not only print a SMILES string.
This page does not invent star ratings or download counts. Organic Chemistry AI’s App Store listing does not yet show a ratings overview, so we will not pretend otherwise.
A practical comparison
Generic chatbots (ChatGPT and similar)
Flexible, but you paste text or a photo into a general model. You often get a plausible mechanism that skips the reagent written above the arrow, or that never says “this is E2.” You also leave the study trail in a chat history that is not built for exam review.
General chemistry homework scanners
Fast at molar mass and limiting reagent. Weak at wedges, dashes, and “which mechanism.” Fine as a companion calculator; incomplete as an ochem tutor.
An org-chem-specific iPhone app
Look for: scan or type; step-by-step with the reaction type named; a tutor that can explain an assignment or check homework; offline quizzes/flashcards; calculators that stay free. Privacy matters too: no required account, images not stored, history on device.
Checklist before you subscribe
- Does a sample solve name SN1/SN2/E1/E2, or only dump arrows?
- Can you crop a handwritten scheme, not just typed text?
- Is there a way to practice (quizzes/flashcards) that does not burn AI credits?
- Are lab calculators gated, or free?
- Is pricing a trial you will forget, or a small number of full solves plus a clear Pro upgrade?
Common mistakes
- Picking the app with the loudest “#1 AI” headline.
- Paying weekly for a tool you only needed for molar mass — that math should be free.
- Trusting a product without reading whether the mechanism type was identified.
How Organic Chemistry AI fits
Organic Chemistry AI is a free-to-download iOS Education app: scan or type, step-by-step solutions with named reaction types, a 24/7 tutor (Explain Assignment and Check My Homework), 8 always-free calculators plus pH and unsaturation explorers, 26 formulas, and offline quizzes/flashcards. Three full solves are free; Pro unlocks unlimited solving. US listing prices for Pro are Weekly $6.99 and Yearly $39.99; your App Store shows the local price. No free trial.
